A long time Orgasm blush, The Multiple highlighter in Copacabana and NARS Sheer Glow foundation user (in Deauville), I thought I’d give the the NARS Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil a try too when I saw it a couple of weeks ago.

“Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil” is a bit of a misnomer, as they’re more of a lip crayon, not a lip pencil (which makes me think of lip liner).

I always use Too Faced Lip Insurance Lip Primer to make any kind of lip color last longer, so that goes on first.

I really, really loved the feel of the Velvet Gloss pencils… They are very creamy and smooth and make you want to press your lips together again and again.

The colors are bold (I have 3 or four shades) and vibrant. All in all, these lip crayons from NARS are very much like a luxe creamy lipstick.

What about the crayon form? I do like it because it’s precise, although I think you end up wasting a lot when you have to sharpen the pencil.

And I hate to say this, but it’s true… The NARS Velvet Gloss Lip Pencils don’t last as long as some of my other lip colors. They last longer then a lip gloss, absolutely. But not as long as a matte lipstick. Which makes sense, of course, but even with the Too Faced Lip Insurance you’ll want to reapply after meals or coffee.

Do I like it? Yes. After my initial purchase of one (“New Lover” was the color), I went back and bought 3 more (Club Mix, Baroque and Hopi). So yes, I really, really like these.

I keep Hopi in my bag because it’s a nice neutral shade that’ll go with whatever I’m wearing and keep me from looking washed out:

There’s a Matte crayon as well called the Velvet Matte Lip Pencil, but I haven’t tried those (Velvet Matte @ Sephora).

I think the crayon form of these really makes me love them – who doesn’t want to color with a big, fat, bold crayon? Yes, they’re $24 (ridiculous) and yes, you use product on sharpening, and yes, they’re not all day wearing, but I still really like them for some unexplainable reason. If I were giving stars, I’d give 3 of 5 for practicality/price and I’d give 5 of 5 because I adore them. So I guess a fair rating would be 4 out of 5?!
